Data Logger - Glasgow’s FORMULA STUDENT RACE Team

The University of Glasgow’s formula student team, UGRacing, requested the design and manufacture of a data logger for the formula student racing car. The device connects to the cars main communication bus and receives sensor data pertaining to driver input and vehicle status. This data can be used to improve driver performance and validate future engineering design decisions. The data logger was designed on a 4 layer PCB. It featured a STM32H743VIT6 microcontroller with integrated CAN FD controllers acting as the devices main communication interface as well as a reserve RS-485 communication port. This provides backwards compatibility with CAN 2.0, the communication protocol currently used on the racing teams vehicle, whilst also providing future extensibility and meeting the 5M baud data rate detailed in the specification. The device also featured an SDIO/SDMMC communication interface to an SD card acting as the non-volatile data storage. Additionally the device included a NEO-M9N GPS module providing positional data and an nRF24 radio transceiver allowing for telemetry and real-time monitoring of vehicle performance. The device comfortably met all aspects of the design specification laid out at the beginning of the project by the formula student team. In some cases it went beyond the minimum requirements to provide a future-proof data-logging solution for the racing team to last them into the future.
