I have always gotten irritation on my underarms when shaving because I never paid attention to the direction of the hair growth or proper prep. I would just put on the canned foam and go to town! This never worked and I eventually started dry shaving my underarms. This was ok, but nothing special and I still had irritation. When I started wet shaving I heard all the guys talk about mapping out their beards and doing a 2-3 pass shave so I figured I should try this on my harder to shave areas like the underarms and my bikini area. I took mental note of how my hair grew and kept that in mind for my shaves. I also tried different ways of pre-shave prep. Here is what I came up with that gives me a great shave on the harder to shave areas. Prep: What you want to do to prepare the hair for shaving is take a hot shower and wash the hair with a Glycerin based soap. You can also let some conditioner or pre-shave sit on the hair to soften it while you take your shower. I also enjoyed using a pre-shave like Geo F. Trumper Skin food, and Edwin Jagger Hydrating Pre-Shave Lotion. Next I'm going to try Proraso Pre-Shave. Lather: When you are ready to shave get out your brush and soap and get a nice thick lather going. You can use a bowl or you can put some cream directly on your underarms and take a damp brush to build the lather on your body. If you have sensitive skin, I suggest building your lather in a bowl then moving to your underarms. You can put the lather right on top of the pre-shave or conditioner. The brush will do a few things for you. First it will exfoliate your skin and second it will lift the hairs and get them ready for the shave. Shave: Now that you know what direction your hair is growing and you have your pre-shave and lathering down pat you are ready to shave. Take your safety razor and lay the head on your skin then rock it down until the blade meets the skin. This will give you the correct angle. Start by going with the grain. For me this is shaving upward. Use short strokes so you can keep that angle on the curves. Remember to use little to no pressure. When you are done with the first pass go back to your brush and refresh the lather by whipping it a little in the bowl again, you may have to add a few drops of water. Re-lather your underarm and this time go across the grain. For me this is shaving diagonal downwards. When you're done with that pass and you feel you need a closer shave or you can re-lather and do the third pass against the grain. This for me is downward. I usually do a two pass shave, but you will find what works best for you. Practice with light pressure, good lather, and correct blade angle and you will be a pro in no time!
