The area, particularly around Wilno, is known as the first and oldest Polish-Kashubian settlement in Canada. The Kashubian people, originally from the Kashubia region in Poland, began settling in this part of Ontario around 1858. The settlers chose this area because its rolling hills and picturesque landscape reminded them of their homeland. Over time, they established a vibrant community, preserving their unique culture and traditions. This video captures the highlights of our time spent in Kaszuby. Below is a list of the specific stops we made during our exploration along with a general description of their significance. 1) The Gray Ranks Monument The Szare Szeregi ("The Gray Ranks") Monument in Kaszuby, near Barry's Bay, Ontario, Canada was erected in memory of 10,000 Polish scouts killed during the Warsaw Uprising in 1944 and also for those murdered in concentration camps in occupied Poland from 1939-1945 by the Nazis. 2) The Cathedral Under the Pines An iconic cultural landmark - the "Katedra pod Sosnami" (Cathedral Under the Pines) in Polish Kaszuby, near Barry's Bay Ontario. It was originally built on the shores of Wadsworth Lake in the 1950's. It is a piece of Polish history and heritage that has brought together people of all ages and backgrounds. It is currently under reconstruction and is expected to be rebuilt in 2024. 3) Wadsworth Lake Public Beach Located in the heart of Kashub country just off Old Barry’s Bay Road, this sandy beach on Wadsworth Lake has a public washroom facility and a floating dock. 4) AirBnB Cottage hosted by Weronika (6 guest maximum) A very relaxing place on 3 acres. 5) St. Mary's Catholic Church in Wilno The oldest Kashubian and Polish parish in Canada founded in 1875 by settlers from Kashubia and Poland. It was built by descendants of Kashubian and Polish pioneers. In 1875, they built a chapel and church called St. Stanislaw Kostka Church. On February 2, 1936, the church burnt down and our current new church St. Mary’s Catholic Church was built. The cornerstone of St.Mary’s was blessed on July 1,1936. 6) Barry's Bay Vito's Restaurant One of the few restaurants open 7 days/week. This restaurant is more than a pizzeria with quite a varied menu and it has a full bar. 7) Zurakowski Park - Barry's Bay Zurakowski Park was officially opened on July 26, 2003 in Barry's Bay, Ontario. It honors local resident and world-renowned test pilot Janusz Zurakowski. 8) Crooked Slide Park Located 3 km from Combermere on Old Barry’s Bay Road. Its uniqueness is attributed to the reconstruction of an original log chute on Byers Creek which was used by loggers in the early 1900s to float logs from the Hopefield, Brudenell, Rockingham, Wilno and Barry’s Bay areas down to the Madawaska River. 9) Polish Kashub Heritage Museum in Wilno Celebrates the rich cultural heritage of the Kashubian people, who were among the first Polish settlers in Canada. The museum features beautifully restored log buildings, including an original Kashubian farmhouse and a furniture maker’s workshop, providing a glimpse into pioneer life. 10) Wilno Restaurant Nestled in the gentle hills of the Madawaska Valley, the Wilno Tavern Restaurant has been offering exceptional hospitality for over 100 years. This historic pub features hearty Polish fare, celebrating the heritage of Wilno’s early pioneer families, as well as a traditional Canadian menu. 11) Eva's Cafe & Schoolhouse Inn Located in Round Lake.
