Hello everyone! In this video, I'll be showing how I painted a watercolor of a pomegranate on a branch of a pomegranate tree. The reference photo wasn’t taken on the best day, with the best lighting, or even the best pomegranate tree. But the interesting part was creating the painting itself. I used paper from a brand I can’t pronounce, Hahnemühle Watercolor paper 200g, A4. It didn’t say “cotton” on the pad, but I feel like it has some cotton in it. The paper absorbs water well. Step 1: I started by sketching the composition. I liked the dry branches, which create delicate patterns around the round pomegranates. Step 2: Next, I masked the details with masking fluid that I didn’t want to cover with paint in the first layers. Since the branches are thin, masking them was easier. I don’t use masking fluid often because it damages brushes, so I used an old brush I didn’t mind ruining. Step 3: I wet the entire surface of the painting evenly and let the water soak in. Step 4: I painted my first watercolor layer. I started with the bright, light areas, which in this case are the pomegranates. Then I painted the warm leaves lit by the light. Finally, I added a cool background to make the pomegranates and leaves stand out. Step 5: I used an eraser to remove the masking fluid. Then I added light details to the branches and highlights on the pomegranate. Step 6: Once this layer dried, I added shadows and details. The shadows are mostly cool compared to the highlights, but it’s important to remember the warm reflections.
