EXERCISES FOR ALL SEASONS: Dragon & Tiger Chi Kung

Dragon & Tiger Chi Kung, barefoot grounding, front view - 07/07/14 (Summer) Now that warm weather is here, whenever I’m outdoors, I take advantage of every opportunity to do my exercises barefoot, terrain permitting. Barefoot Grounding playlist:    • Barefoot Grounding   In this video, I am doing Dragon & Tiger Chi Kung, with my bare feet contacting the ground. I begin the set by pointing to the K1 / yung ch’uan / “Bubbling Well” areas of my feet    • EXERCISES FOR ALL SEASONS: Deep Knee ...   ** I added Dragon & Tiger Chi Kung to my exercise routines several years ago. Bruce Frantzis wrote two very detailed books about this exercise - - “Dragon & Tiger Medical Qigong,” volumes 1 & 2. These books contain many detailed diagrams. I continue to re-view and re-read these materials to refine my execution of this chi kung set. There is a great deal of information in these two books which my mind and body is still assimilating. I get a little closer every day to doing the complete set correctly. Like most mind-body coordination activities, it doesn’t happen overnight. Takes mindful practice. Attention to details. Correct repetition. And elimination of bad habits that were unconsciously picked up early in the learning process. That’s what “refining” involves - - stripping away incorrect actions that the body continues to repeat mindlessly, automatically, because those incorrect movements became habitual actions early in the learning process. Now those actions have to be unlearned and more precise actions substituted for the wrong ones. It’s a refining process. Like chiseling a marble sculpture, by moving from very rough outlines to more and more polished details. Even though I’ve been working on this routine on and off during the last 3+ years, in many ways, my current rendition is still a “rough draft.” Many details are still not quite there yet. It’s a work in progress. I gradually improve my daily rendition of Dragon & Tiger Chi Kung by comparing my movements to those of long-term practitioners and teachers of this exercise. Many videos of the complete Dragon & Tiger set are available on YouTube, including these:    • Dragon and Tiger Medical Qigong      • Jane Launchbury - Dragon and Tiger Qi...      • Dragon and Tiger Medical Qigong      • Dragon & Tiger Medical Chi Kung   Dragon & Tiger Chi Kung definitely helps me feel chi flowing through and around my body more distinctly, so I am very happy to do it, even if I am still doing the movements relatively crudely. One minor drawback of exercising barefoot outdoors - - sometimes the ground is full of pebbles and sharp stones, or protruding roots, which makes it difficult to stand or balance on one foot for more than a few seconds, without fidgeting and rearranging the foot. I try to clear a small space and make it as smooth as possible before beginning this exercise. ** Recently I came across this very interesting film which documents the many health benefits of connecting to the Earth with bare skin: GROUNDED http://www.hulu.com/watch/670531 ** What do I like about this place in my local park? It’s far away from cars, and car exhaust fumes! The air is relatively clean here - - as clean as it gets in my neighborhood. There’s a lake nearby, where winds blow away all sorts of car pollution. The pine trees smell nice! I am inhaling fragrant, clean air each time I take a deep breath. Birds chirp in the trees. When the sun is shining, the sand glows warm beneath my feet. As I do my deep-breathing forms, I absorb the sun’s warmth. Occasional breezes caress my skin. It’s a great total body feeling. I feel restful. My mind quiets down, settles down, becomes peaceful, calm. I can pay attention to subtle internal sensations and circulate chi easily in this peaceful environment. Very few passer-bys. No distractions. (Except some pesky little flies now and then). Warm clouds of chi pass through and around my body, mixing with the warm rays of the sun, and the warm air radiating from the sand beneath my feet. Total-body glow! It’s nice. That’s why I seek out this place. When I arrive here, I’ve reached the destination for my day’s walk in the park. Here… I do some tai chi movements, some deep breathing, some chi kung. Sometimes I stand near the lake and watch the waves as I do some standing meditation / deep-breathing routines    • CMC 37P TAI CHI FORM: Posture 37D (v1)   Then, too soon, half an hour has already passed, and it’s time to walk back to the house.
