Improve your tree's health! Watch this Airspade root collar excavation and read description!

My wife and I documented a great root collar excavation job where we were able to improve the health of a very mature Hickory next to a client's house. (check out education below for information on why RCEs are important) VvVvV Trees that grow in the open as well as the dominant, larger trees amid a group of shorter trees SHOULD have a visible "trunk flare" or taper at their root collar. This is the wider part of the tree where the main buttress roots enter the soil. A BURIED root collar (a common result of construction and back fill) will hide the trunk flare and poses significant health problems for your tree. Problems include a restriction of the tree's respiration process, the increased tendency of the tree to form girdling roots, and an environment conducive for fungal rot or other pests to harm/enter the tree. If left uncorrected, the tree may become structurally compromised *especially due to gridling roots*, or could begin to decline in health. Tree removals are usually much more costly than correcting a buried trunk via a root collar excavation (RCE). It is not advisable to attempt larger RCEs unless you have the proper arborist tools and experience. Shovels and high pressure water can significantly harm your tree in an excavation process.
