This video covers the process of replacing the 24 kWh battery pack in a first-generation Nissan LEAF, which is emerging as a viable way to extend the life of this veteran electric car. Launched in 2010, the Nissan LEAF has been on the road for more than a decade now, so some early battery packs are starting to enter second-life uses (see links below). Although more recent EVs employ carefully-managed battery packs that are likely to outlast the rest of the car, the early model years of the Nissan LEAF saw significant degradation in some batteries. With a limited range of around 73 miles to begin with, LEAF models from 2011 and 2012 can't afford to lose a significant chunk of that range. We visited the hybrid and EV auto repair experts at Leo & Sons in Lawrence, MA to check out the process and see a 2012 Nissan LEAF get a new lease of life with this switch to a more healthy 24 kWh pack. Hat tip to New Zealand-based @EVsEnhanced, who created the translator kit for this process and have some great videos on their channel covering this popular model. These larger capacity packs are in limited supply as they're newer, but we can expect to see increasing interest in Nissan Leaf battery upgrades due to the relatively straightforward replacement process.
