I was given a track plan for an HO-scale layout that I may get to build the scenery on. Since the plan had a number of problems, I set out to improve it. Follow along as I smooth out the various problems. The original plan was drawn with most curves at 27" radius WITHOUT EASEMENTS - fine for small locomotives and short cars - but this was supposed to be a display loop for the customer's passenger trains. meaning long cars. The new plan features exactly the same track layout, but with easemented curves of 36" and larger (there is one 34" radius curve in a tunnel where there really was no space for anything larger). The other changes are mainly cosmetic. The original plan looks like it was drawn for sectional track (it wasn't) with long straights running parallel to the fascia, joined by right-angle curves. My version introduces cosmetic curves in the 20' - 100' range, puts the remaining straights at an angle to the fascia, and broadens most of the curves well above the quoted minimum.
