A Day with Shepherds at Planina Vlašić

Planina Vlašič, located in Central Bosnia-Herzegovina, is renowned for its natural beauty, traditional shepherding methods, and a local sheep cheese known as Vlašićki sir. The region takes pride in a local breed of sheep called Dubska (also known as Vlašićka or Travnička) pramenka, which is well-adapted to the harsh environment and resistant to diseases that affect other sheep breeds. Throughout summer, local shepherds herd large flocks of these sheep on Vlašić mountain, and in autumn, they return to their villages to sell their products. I spent three days camping at one of the shepherd cottages. My gracious hosts, Pajo and Hata Rubanović, allowed me to document their daily life, share meals, stay with them, and meet their neighbors.
