How using other drummers, musicians, songs, unique parts, drum beats, drum fills, and anything else I hear or see to inspire me to make something unique is part of the heritage of music. I recently had My friend Darren King, former drummer of Mute Math and creative extraordinaire, In to the studio to talk to my Drum Better Daily members about creativity within their drumming. Darren and I go way back all the way to the early days of my (and his) career in New Orleans. You can find all of the interviews and breakdowns Darren did in the members area on my website. Do this the next time you sit down at the drums...take your favorite drum beat from another drummer that you know how to play. Now, change it. Play it on a different sound source. Play it backwards. Play it inside out. Slow it down. Speed it up. Add parts. Take away parts. PLAY with this drum beat that you love. Before long, you wont really recognize the original drum beat. You’ll just hear all of the possibilities. It’s not wrong to take inspiration from other musicians. What is wrong is using their material exactly as they wrote it and claiming it as your own. That’s something else completely different. But to be inspired. To quote another musician. That’s special. And it’s part of the history and heritage of music and drumming. It’s how we build on those that came before us and add to it. There is a wonderful book called Steal Like An Artist. I suggest every creative read it.
