Vanhal Double Bass Concerto - Duo Sweet 17

Johann Matthias Sperger, for whom this concerto was probably written, composed several duets for bass and viola and for bass and cello. Some of that music was later used in bass concertos. We decided to do it the other way around, and to imagine Johann Matthias going on a concert tour with the Vanhal concerto. Life was hard for musicians back then, and they often had to travel all over Europe, playing for bishops and princes in the hope of landing a job somewhere. So there goes Sperger, unable to afford an orchestra to accompany him on his trip. So he just takes his friend who plays the Amore, and he arranges the concerto as a duo. Our arrangement is still a work in progress but it's coming along nicely. Here's a peek behind the scenes with two early rehearsals : one in the Brussels' Opera storage room, on a modern bass in viennese tuning, the other one at Rosario in Bever on a Stefan Krattenmacher 5-string viennese violone with gut strings and frets, and a freshly rehaired, very squeaky bow...
