Rob: Hey everybody. Rob here at etrailer.com. Today, we're going to be taking a look at the Kodiak disc brake kit, and we're also going to show you how to get them installed on your trailer. Now, a lot of people are switching from drums to disc brakes and for a good reason. Let's face it, cars used to have drum brakes on them as the standard. And as time went on, we figured out that disc brakes are a lot better for performance and just more cost-effective in the long run. They are going to give us better braking performance, especially on the highway at higher speeds, where drum brakes tend to start to fade and we don't get that consistent braking. But our disc brakes are going to give us that torque that we need and apply the brakes consistently and smoothly. Now here, we got our old brake assembly. Now, part of the reason why disc brakes are more cost-effective is because look at how many moving parts we have. We have the wheel cylinder plus all the springs and hardware, and both shoes have to move in order to apply the brakes. Whereas on our disc brakes we really only have one moving component and that's going to be the caliper. The pistons going to apply pressure, which is going to cause the caliper to slide and the brake pads are going to grab onto the disc.A rotor and hub are one piece and they're integrated together, which definitely helps out with the installation. And they're going to be made out of cast iron, which definitely is great for those high heat applications. And it's really going to help out dissipate the heat while we're braking, and it definitely makes a really good surface for our brakes to apply and grab onto. Now, the rotors are vented, which is definitely going to help out with heat. Dissipation. Shouldn't have to worry too much about brake fade. Brake fade is what happens when your brakes get too hot and they tend to not work as properly, but the vents are definitely going to dissipate that heat better and allow us to have plenty of stopping power and stop a lot quicker than drum brakes. Now, the calipers themselves are going to be made out of a cast iron as well, which is nice because they're not going to be flexing like some of the aluminum ones.I don't have to worry about misalignment or anything like that. And they are self-adjusting. So once we get them in place, put brake pads in, get everything set up and all we have to do is just monitor the thickness of our brake pads. We don't have to get underneath there and adjust them like old style drum brakes or anything like that. Our caliper and brackets are going to have an e-coat finish on them. Now there's going to be really good for freshwater applications and definitely resisting rust and corrosion from building up. However, if you are in an area where you have a lot of salt water or your trailer's going to be where there's a lot of salt water, I definitely recommend the Kodiak version of disc brakes. It has a Dacromet finish on it. It's going to be a lot more resistant to that. Salt water. Not saying that these can't be in saltwater, but it is designed for limited use or no use with saltwater. Now the brake pads are going to be an important factor in the braking performance and how it's going to stop. There's typically three different kinds of brake pads. There's organic, semi metallic and ceramic brake pads. Now our Kodiak kit has ceramic brake pads included, so they are going to have a really high performance stopping power and give us again that smooth braking action. Now if we get into some of the specifications of the brakes so you can make sure that this is going to fit your trailer. First off, I do want to mention that a kit comes as a set for one axle. So we're going to get two rotors and hub assemblies, two calipers, two brackets, and two sets of pads. And one thing to keep in mind is that the bearings and seals are not included with the brakes. However, the races are in place, which I think is probably one of the worst parts of getting those races to seat in there properly. But all we'll need to do is pick up the bearings and the seal for the backside of the rotor here. Now the brake kit is designed for 7,000 pound axles with a number 42 spindle. Now you can see here, we have an eight on six and a half inch bolt pattern. So you do want to double-check your wheels and make sure that it'll fit. And it does include the studs already installed on the rotor, so we're not doing any extra work. These are half inch studs. So ag
