As most of you already know, Shayne and I work professionally in the marine industry. I try to get a regular video up to share with our friends on YouTube once a week to keep the channel growing but I'm going to be honest - it is REALLY hard to be working, homeschooling 3 teenage kids and putting quality content regularly on the Tube. Sometimes we just have to concentrate on paying to LIVE THE DREAM. So that being said, I have had a bit of time between projects to get an update out to everyone. What exactly have we been up to since we showed our last video of a crack in the hull in Barcelona? Well Shayne is no longer with the French America's Cup team. It was a disappointing end as we all had high hopes of it being a really great campaign with lots of learning and sharing of ideas. Unfortunately, as Shayne tells us, the cultural fit just wasn't right and he left the Frenchies in November last year. That did leave us in an unfortunate position as we had already taken Paikea out of the water and started to pull everything apart. Bare fibreglass walls inside all the cabins and the outside wasn't much better. We discovered blistering in the gelcoat near the waterline and had to sand the hull back to bare substrate and epoxy coat the hull before applying new antifouling. There was a heap of work to do and only a few weeks in which to do it. It was a really stressful month! Once we'd finished up in Barcelona we headed down to Valencia to work on the refit of a mini maxi 72 renamed Balthasar. It turned out to be a great move and a much better fit for us. What has been even better, was that I have also been involved in this particular project. It has been great for me to be creative and do some arts and crafts work for the Balthasar team. I love making videos and I also love it when I get to be creative with the sewing machine. For those of you interested, I bought a Sailrite sewing machine and I have to say it has been amazing for the covers and canvas type work I have been doing. It weights a tonne and it was a long negotiation process to get it past the Captain but it has been well worth it. In addition to the 72fter refit, we have got our hands on a 66ft Gunboat! We are looking after her, while her owner puts her on the market. So we're hoping to get a heap of good videos for everyone who is interested in these types of boats.
