The Dhauli Shanti Stupa, also known as the Peace Pagoda, is a significant Buddhist monument located on the Dhauli Hill, near Bhubaneswar in Odisha, India. It holds great historical and religious importance and is a popular tourist attraction. On the way to Dhauli, we had a break at Ganguram snacks, Rajmahal, Bhubaneswar. This is one of the oldest snacks centre of the city. We had some delicious breakfast and started our journey towards Dhauli  The Dhauli stupa is easily accessible from Bhubaneswar, which is approximately 8 kilometers away. Visitors can reach it by road using local transportation options like buses, taxis, or private vehicles. The best time to visit is during the cooler months, from October to March, to enjoy the pleasant weather while exploring the site. It is a major tourist attraction, drawing visitors from around the world who come to learn about its history and experience its tranquility. For Buddhists and other spiritual seekers, the stupa is a place of meditation and reflection, promoting the values of peace and non-violence. The Shanti Stupa was built in 1972 by the Japan Buddha Sangha and the Kalinga Nippon Buddha Sangha. It symbolizes the spread of Buddhism and the message of peace and harmony. The stupa is a beautiful white structure adorned with stone panels depicting various stages of Buddha's life and the teachings of Buddhism. The architecture combines traditional Buddhist elements with modern aesthetics. The stupa is a vital part of Odisha's cultural heritage, representing the region's historical connection with Buddhism and its values. The stupa is situated on a hilltop, offering a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape, including the Daya River. The serene environment adds to the spiritual and tranquil experience for visitors. Dhauli is historically significant as the site of the Kalinga War, fought in the 3rd century BCE. This battle had a profound impact on Emperor Ashoka, leading him to embrace Buddhism and propagate peace and non-violence. Dhauli Shanti Stupa is also known as peace pagoda. It stands as a testament to these ideals, attracting visitors for its historical importance, serene atmosphere, and panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. It serves as a place for reflection, meditation, and the promotion of global peace. There is also light and sound show of rupees 50 per person, which you can enjoy during evening. It covers the early life of the king Ashoka and his journey towards Budhism. Overall, the Dhauli Shanti Stupa stands as a symbol of peace and a reminder of the transformative power of compassion and non-violence, drawing visitors to its serene and historic grounds. Besides Dhauli Stupa, Dhabaleswara Temple is situated on the Dhauli hills, which are historically significant due to the nearby Dhauli Shanti Stupa and the rock edicts of Emperor Ashoka. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, who is worshipped here as Dhabaleswara. The site is both a religious and a tourist destination, attracting visitors with its serene atmosphere and scenic views of the surrounding landscape. The Bhairangeswar Shiva Temple is another significant religious site located at Dhauli. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is situated on the Dhauli hills, a place renowned for its historical and spiritual importance. The Bhairangeswar Shiva Temple adds to the spiritual ambiance of the area, attracting devotees who come to seek blessings and enjoy the serene environment. Built in 8th century, the temple is very ancient. It's calm and spirituality attracts tourists and pilgrims visiting Dhauli Stupa. There is a picnic spot nearby as well. Near the stupa, you can find rock edicts inscribed by Emperor Ashoka, which are among the earliest written records in India. These edicts preach moral and ethical guidelines, emphasizing compassion, non-violence, and respect for all life. There is a beautiful garden inside the rock edicts premises. Some part of the park is naturally maintained. The Ashoka Stambh, also known as the Ashokan Pillar, near Dhauli is another significant historical monument located on the Dhauli hills, close to Dhauli Stupa. The pillar is associated with Emperor Ashoka of the Maurya Dynasty, who erected it after the Kalinga War around 260 BCE.  The Ashoka Stambh is inscribed with edicts that reflect Ashoka's new policy of Dhamma, righteousness and his commitment to spreading Buddhist teachings. There is also a Japanese Buddhist temple near by Dhauli. You can also visit here and have a peaceful and spiritual time. There are many restaurants and hotels at nearby places, where visitors can take a break and enjoy some food. While returning we stopped at Bhai Bhai Rasagulla, which is famous for its delicious snacks and food.
