Video recorder: smartphone, DSLR camera, Zoom video recorder, etc. 2. Optional: Audio recorder: I used a Zoom H4N to record higher quality audio (not the same as Zoom Media online!). 3. Optional: USB to micro-USB cable to record directly to the computer. (Alternatively, you can simply remove the SD card and transfer the files manually onto your computer.) 4. Smartphone (or other device) to play back the lead track for the recording of the additional tracks. 5. Earphones ✅Record your first track: 12:17 If you intend to record a separate (high-quality) AUDIO track, set up your video AND audio recorders and record both simultaneously. Optional: Record the audio directly into your computer into Garage Band or Audacity. TIP: Be sure to CLAP a few seconds before you start playing so that you can easily line up the audio with the video later in iMovie. ✅Record the second (and all other additional) tracks the same way while playing the video/audio file on your smartphone (or another device) using your earphones. (I have once used my laptop.) ✅Transfer the files to your computer. ✅Open iMovie. Create new project. Import all desired media files into the media library. 1:27 ✅Select Backgrounds. Choose and drag the desired background into the timeline. 1:51 On ‘i’, adjust the length of the background to the length of your video. ✅IMPORTANT: Plan out how many screens you want to fit onto the screen and visually plan enough room to fit them all. 2:38 ✅Keeping in mind how many screens you want to fit on top of the background, select the first footage and drag the first video file into the timeline (on TOP of the Background - not below, otherwise you will be dragging it in as an audio-only track.) 3:15 ✅Making sure the upper video track is highlighted in yellow, click the Video Overlay icon (rectangle floating on top of a dotted rectangle) Select “Picture in Picture”. Adjust the size and position of this first screen on top of the background. ✅Adjust audio levels. 2:44 ✅Rotate footage (if necessary). (Under Crop - then rotate as desired.) 3:45 Adjust level of Dissolve (if desired). 6:08 ✅Crop the footage (if necessary). (You can only do this in the media library and not the timeline.) ✅Adjust the length of the footage. 4:08 ✅When satisfied, export this first video layer temporarily onto your Desktop. 4:46 When done, click “Show”. 5:28 ✅Clear the timeline and drag this exported video into the timeline. 5:48 ✅Repeat the above steps: Choose the next footage, drag into timeline on top of the first completed layer. Go to Video Overlay, Picture in Picture, re-size and position. Sync up the audio of the different footages. Be patient with this step! 8:26 ✅Export this new video layer. ✅Repeat the process until you have completed adding the number of multi-tracks you desire. Yes, this process is tedious! 11:32 ✅When you are done adding all the video layers, export your final video. For YouTube, export at 720p (60fps) or lower. High Quality is fine. No need for “Best (ProRes)". ✅You are done!
