Ginger Baker was widely considered rock’s first superstar drummer. He was known for his flamboyant playing style that were influenced by jazz, rock, and West African music. His jazz background and interest in African music helped him develop and master a polyrhythmic approach that changed rock drumming. In 1969 Baker joined Clapton, Steve Winwood and Ric Grech to form the supergroup Blind Faith. He played a similarly key role in shaping the more finessed work of one of rock's first supergroups, Blind Faith. The band broke up after a challenging U.S. tour. In 1970 he went on to form his own short-lived group, Ginger Baker’s Air Force. He led bands that linked the flamboyant intensity of rock to the intricate polyrhythms of jazz and jazz-rock fusion. He was the first rock-era to seek out and become fluent in the nuances of African drumming – famously collaborating with the Nigerian Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti. He's often credited for bringing the extended drum solo to the fore in rock music. His work in Cream influenced almost every rock drummer that came after him.
