Apple Stock Split (How To Profit From It)

In this video, I discuss the upcoming Apple stock split, and how to profit from it. On July 30, Apple announced blow-out earnings as well as an upcoming 4:1 stock split that will be effective on August 31. This stock split will increase the shares outstanding by 4x, while dividing the price per share by 1/4, so the net effect on market cap should (theoretically) be negligible. In a stock split, you are simply taking the same pie and dividing it into more slices. In practice, however, market participants often view stock splits as a signal from company management that future prospects for the firm are excellent and improving. This explains much of the gap-up that happened on the day following the announcement for Apple. Since that gap up, post earnings announcement drift seems to have taken over. In my experience, the best way to trade a stock split is to buy shortly after the announcement and then sell a day or two before the actual stock split takes place. This strategy worked well with the 2014 Apple stock split, and is a classic example of "buy the rumor, sell the news." Not investment advice! Consult a financial adviser.
