You have just examined the patient and cleaned the eyes with a mild saline solution. There is crusting of the eyelids and lashes. You suspect conjunctivitis Tasks • Find out more about eye problems (onset, duration of problem, any discharge, level of severity/discomfort, etc.) • Give conjunctivitis as likely cause (common non-traumatic eye complaint: irritation, discharge; possible causes virus, bacteria, allergy, etc.). • Reassure about conjunctivitis (e.g., treated effectively: no adverse effect on vision, etc.). Advise the patient to visit the doctor (e.g., for diagnosis confirmation, prescription for antibiotics, etc.). • Confirm the possibility of contagiousness of conjunctivitis (e.g. early diagnosis and treatment: limiting spread). Emphasise the need to avoid contaminating other people (e.g., hygiene practices: strict hand washing, frequent linen change, etc.). • Find out if the patient wears contact lenses. Emphasise contact lenses are not to be worn with conjunctivitis (e.g., until any treatment is complete, etc.). • Recommend symptom relief, e.g. cleaning eyelids with a wet cloth, cold/warm compresses several times daily, etc.). Find out any other questions/concerns.
