The topic in this chapter is the Roman Republic. The Romans were once ruled by the Etruscans but eventually gained independence and grew to become one of the great powers of the ancient world. The Romans were influenced heavily by Greek art and architecture, however Rome's need to build large scale works of public architecture to serve a growing and demanding populous led Roman engineers to create structures on a scale that even rivaled the works of Ancient Egypt. For our purposes, Roman history is divided into two broad periods of time - the Republican period which ends around the 1st c.
