An "At a Glance" specification sheet for the Stephenson "Type 59 Cyclekart" was officially released in the April 2002 (April Fools) issue of Road & Track magazine, representing the first published figures of any kind for the class, and setting forth the specifications for wheelbase, track, engine type and transmission; setting the baseline for the "Stephenson Formula" that most future karts in the class follow. Cyclekarts are compact, lightweight, sports machines, home-built and hand-built by their drivers for the pursuit of classic motorsports excitement. They are not built as serious racing machines or show cars. They are built purely for the personal satisfaction and fun of driving a machine you built yourself. As a driving machine, the cyclekart formula loosely restricts certain aspects of the machines to maintain good sporting performance without compromising the light-hearted nature of these machines and the people who build them. Cyclekarts and their builders don't like to take things too seriously, but encourage good, sporting competition for fun. Cyclekart specifications allow all cars built to be similar in performance without strictly regulating the rules. Cyclekarts are built for the pleasure of imagination, design and construction of the kart. Cyclekarts are based on the styling of racing cars from the 1920s and 1930s. Making it look good is fundamental, performance is secondary in the cyclekarting community. Builders select an inspiration car, an existing full-size vintage race car, and model their cycle kart design on the inspiration car, adding details and features to their cycle car to better mimic their inspiration car. Since the karts are scaled down to match the common design feature of a 17-inch wheel, the scale is about 1:2 Since the adult driver is not scaled down with the kart design, the cockpit is usually full-size, resulting in the car being a "caricature" of its inspiration car, with a slightly oversized cockpit, rather than an exact model with a proportional cockpit.
