HOW TO FILLET LINGCOD - FISHING TIPS

Learn how to fillet lingcod with this video. Our video shows the key points on how to fillet a lingcod. The following points are summarize the steps to fillet a lingcod. #1 cut along the dorsal on both sides - this really helps to get the maximum amount of meat off for each fillet, also helps on larger fish if your knife is one of the shorter ones. #2 cut the belly open careful not to cut the guts. #3 cut around the head ensure to get the wedge of meat that is at the top of the head #4 lay the knife flat and run along the spine using the bones as your guide to cut the fillet off the lingcod. You will be cutting through rib bones so this is where you need a sharp knife. Notes: *A sharp knife is critical spend 5 mins and sharpen your knives. Most any sharpener will do I use a pull through style that is quick and safe to use on the seas when it is rough. This will greatly improve your fillets and cut the time it takes. *when you start with step 4 your knife might bind up into the bones. If this happens you are likely cutting too deep and digging into the spine. Pull the blade back a bit and angle the knife cutting edge a bit higher and you should stop digging into the spine. You should not need tons of power here it should cut fairly smoothly if your knife is sharp. *if on step 4 you find you are leaving alot of meat on the fish then you are not cutting deep enough. Lay the knife flat and use the spine as the guide and you should maximize the amount of meat you can get off the fish. This skill takes practice. If you try your first fish and leave a bit of meat on it don't worry about it consider that you have just succeeded on your first fish and that you will get better with time. *check your regulations some areas you must leave the skin on, and possibly the tail on the fillets. For knives, in this video I am using a cheap rapala knife. You can use more expensive knives from Forschner or the new styles from Bubba Blade. The longer blades can make it a bit easier on deep fish. The number one characteristic of a good knife is its sharpness! I hope this video is of value to you. Give thumbs up if you enjoy the video.
