(26 Jun 2003) 1. Wide shot exterior of Iranian-language TV station 2. Close shot of station logo 3. Mid shot of news conference in TV studio 4. Mid shot of photographers 5. SOUNDBITE: (Farsi) Davood Beyk Zadeh, former general of Iran's Revolutionary Guards "The regime has lost its legitimacy inside and outside of the country. Unlike what most people think, this regime is not going to fight to the end. But when it will fall depends very much on the people of Iran and whether it can be done without bloodshed, because they want a peaceful change. At this time they are working toward this aim. How far they can go down this path, we don't know. If it is bloody, we don't know. But nevertheless, the end is not very far." 6. Mid shot of Zadeh at news conference 7. SOUNDBITE: (Farsi) Davood Beyk Zadeh, former general of Iran's Revolutionary Guards "Yesterday (Tuesday June 24) one of my contacts in Iran in a good position told me that the regime is planning, either on July the ninth or before July the ninth, the regime itself, either to terrorise or to kill a couple of people - it could be clergy or non clergy -- who have some sort of popularity among the people. And they want to announce that these people were killed by students. So they create situations of this kind to deviate public opinion of the world and the country. This news came to me yesterday because the ninth of July is the anniversary of the students or the peoples uprising of four years ago." 8. Mid shot of news conference 9. SOUNDBITE: (Farsi) Davood Beyk Zadeh, former general of Iran's Revolutionary Guards "The weapon of mass destruction, especially the nuclear weapon, is very dangerous. There are three countries in that region that everybody knows that they have. Iran has the capability and it is very dangerous. The United Nations, with all other members of the United Nations and the United States, they have to do their utmost to clean that part of the world from these nuclear weapons." 10. SOUNDBITE: (Farsi) Shahram Homavoun, President, Channel One TV "Those people are fighting for freedom and liberty in Iran, including this station. We do not want to change a government with another government. We are not after any particular government, any particular regime. We want the people of Iran to be in power by electing their own representatives and whatever regime, whatever government they want. This is what we our fighting for. Please do not misunderstand us. We are not working for any particular notion, philosophy, any kind of government, any kind of regime in Iran, just the liberty of the people and empowering people for their own destiny." 14. Mid shot of Homavoun and Zadeh in TV studio STORYLINE: In an interview for a dissident Iranian TV channel based in the US a former general of Iran's Revolutionary Guards said on Wednesday he believes the end is near for his country's ruling regime. Davood Beyk Zadeh said recent student protests in Iran are an indication that the current regime in Tehran has lost its legitimacy inside Iran. It's an opinion that Iranians in Iran are able to hear through Channel One TV which broadcasts in Iran's Farsi language via satellite and the internet to Iran and the rest of the world. Zadeh served in key posts of Iran's military after the overthrow of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi in 1979 and was a founding member of the Revolutionary Guards but fled Iran two years ago.
