MONTENEGRO HIGHLIGHT STARI BAR

Montenegro is a country in the Balkans. It is located on the Adriatic Sea opposite Italy and borders, clockwise from the sea, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Kosovo and Albania. The Montenegrin capital is Podgorica. Lots of natural beauty, quiet beaches and a wonderful climate, that is Montenegro. Wherever you go, in Montenegro ('Black Mountain') you are always in the company of the mountains. Here the wild, beautiful nature is in charge. But this fascinating Balkan country has much more to offer. From sunny beaches and sultry summer evenings to the remains of civilizations thousands of years old. Montenegro is so compact that it is very easy to travel through. This experience journey takes you from blue-green mountain lakes and nature parks to Venetian towns, spectacularly situated monasteries and prestigious marinas. Along the way you will discover one of the last rainforests and the largest bird sanctuary in Europe, and the second deepest canyon in the world. Herceg Novi is a picturesque and old town and has been the 'Gateway of the Bay of Kotor' for centuries. Spend your day walking through the cozy alleys, admire the richly decorated churches and visit the central square with its beautiful bell tower. In one of the four fortresses of the old city you can enjoy theater performances, concerts and festivals during the summer months. From Herceg Novi we continue the journey to the beautiful Durmitor National Park. Deep river gorges such as that of the Piva flow from the mountains. The most spectacular is the rugged Tara, the second deepest canyon in the world. Here you can take a rafting trip like never before. Here you will spot deer, roe deer, brown bears, wolves and lynxes, in short, a paradise for animal lovers. We visit the spectacularly situated Ostrog monastery, the holiest place in Montenegro. The monastery seems to have been built into the rocks. Via Cetinje and Rijeka Crnojevića you reach Lake Skadar, the largest bird sanctuary in Europe. This is the last habitat of the pelican on the old continent. Be sure to take a boat trip, or visit one of the numerous monasteries, churches or fortresses in this area as we did. The Bay of Kotor is one of the 10 most beautiful bays in the world. Kotor exudes a special softness with its Venetian campaniles and palaces and its taverns and terraces. A visit to Perast and its two small islands are the highlight of this trip. A walk along the exclusive hotel island of Sveti Stefan is definitely worthwhile. Podgorica, the capital of Montenegro, is located in a wine-growing region and boasts of having the most famous wineries. It is a capital that travelers often ignore, but the city is more lively than you think! Here you see how the real Montenegrins live, people who love going out, art and coffee. In Podgorica you will also find a mixture of historic buildings and modern architecture, and of course delicious regional wines that you should definitely taste. It is special to note that this old abandoned city is much more impressive than the new city of Bar. This is because there is still an impressively large fortress and many ruins can still be found. So for history and culture you go to Stari Bar. A very nice place to spend a day. After a major earthquake in 1979, Stari Bar (the old town) was completely abandoned and the new town of Bar was built on the coast. Now, as mentioned, the old town is mainly visited for its special ruins. Budva is a picturesque town in Montenegro where you can visit many historical sights. You walk around in a romantic setting and pass centuries-old churches, Roman ruins and beautiful houses. You can also visit the famous beaches of the Budva Riviera and for the best view of the city you have to climb the city walls. On the south side of the old town, at the highest point, you will find the Citadel of Budva. This city fortress was built where the city walls begin and end and was first described in the 15th century. In the 19th century the fort was upgraded and restored. Then the small church of Santa Maria de Castelo was demolished and a military garrison was placed in the fortress. Today the citadel is a museum. The Bay of Kotor is a bay in the southwest of Montenegro. It is one of the main tourist attractions of Montenegro. The Bay of Kotor has been inhabited for ages and has several picturesque places such as Kotor, Risan, Tivat, Perast and Herceg Novi, as well as many churches and monasteries.
