The Zebra Dove, also known as the Barred Dove, is native to Southeast Asia. It was imported to Hawai`i in 1922. It is now one of Hawai`iʻs most abundant lowland birds. The repetitive staccato call of this small dove is a major part of the morning sounds of the Islands. It is equally common in both rural and urban areas. In our cities and towns, they can become quite tame almost to the point of being underfoot. It gets its name from the many striations prominent on the neck and breast. The Zebra Dove varies from light brown to gray and has light blue facial skin.
