For this collection, I revisited a hauntingly beautiful score from Cloud Atlas, a piece that first enchanted me on cool autumn nights in 2012 and again in spring’s gentle embrace. Its ethereal melody transported me to a realm where souls traverse through time and space, mirroring the movie’s profound narrative of eternal lives across different worlds. As summer brought the chance to revisit this score, the same enigmatic allure swept over me, guiding my vision for Collection 9—aptly named Ephemeral. Like the fleeting moments of a runway show or the delicate beauty of a single collection, this theme captures the transient essence of life. Inspired by nature’s ever-changing splendor, the collection evokes a world where mythical creatures dwell within seasonal gardens. Each piece reflects the ephemeral beauty of flowers—like a sage green organza gown, its layers mimicking the delicate transition from vibrant greens to a soft nude, reminiscent of a blooming stem that teeters on the edge of life’s final whisper. Our use of layered silk chiffons and georgettes captures the progression from spring’s fresh beginnings through summer’s warmth into the crisp, wind-swept days of fall. In a new exploration, we ventured into jewelry design, crafting intricate embroideries and hairpieces that elevate the ANDREW KWON woman to an otherworldly realm. Our pointed ballet slingback flats, adorned with fluttering white lace, close the collection with a note of ethereal elegance. A standout feature of this collection is our bespoke lace fabrics, developed through dip-dyeing, spray painting, and velvet pressing techniques. Notably, we partnered with a renowned lace maker to create a fabric that took over a month to craft. Each floral motif was meticulously hand-painted and colored over 70 hours, culminating in a mini dress with an explosive butterfly effect, draped over 150 yards of tulle. Ephemeral represents a journey of discovery—both the essence of ANDREW KWON and the new horizons our atelier embraces. As I transition from my apartment studio of four years to a dedicated atelier, I am thrilled to share the unfolding stories and dreams captured in this collection. COQODAQ provided the perfect backdrop for this season’s collection, with its arches complementing the mysterious and ethereal nature of Ephemeral.
