PLEASE READ!!! I’m going to go on record as having said shed closures and shed hunting seasons are stupid, pointless and don’t work the way the authorities intend for them to. Zero deer and elk lives were spared by closing the state to shed hunting. Shed closures and seasons only impact the honest and law abiding citizens. There were still hundreds of humans out there before the May 1st opener, picking up antlers like they always do - regardless of the rule change. Not to mention the thousands of others that aren’t shed hunting but still able to recreate as they please (like they should) as freedom loving, red blooded Americans. I understand and agree with the fact that our wildlife needed additional help and protection this year because of the heavy winter and snowfall. That is without question something that anyone with half a brain can agree with. However, to close shed hunting while allowing so many other activities on the same winter habitat, is absurd and feels an awful lot like only those that look for sheds were being singled out. While I don’t claim to have all the answers. I’d love to be included in the discussion when talking about what to do in the future. Trail cameras were taken away from us WITHOUT a single scrap of evidence or data that suggests what “they” were saying about them and their use. What they brought to the table was merely opinion. Opinions of those that don’t like trail cams and saw them as destructive to our wildlife. They did that with what was a very clear outcry from the public - NOT in support of the trail camera ban or season dates. If they aren’t willing to listen to the public (which by the way it was 70% NO to a 20% YES with a little less than 10% being indifferent to banning trail cam use). I was there that day and spoke my mind to the Wildlife Board. I watched as a majority of the Board absolutely ignored the public. If they don’t represent the public, we all need to ask ourselves… who do they represent?! Next on the table of things to be taxed, altered or taken away from us will be and are not limited to… shed hunting. After that, it will be bows, shotguns, scopes, binoculars, radios, muzzleloaders, rifles, spotting scopes and guns in general. It won’t be too much longer before we won’t be able to hunt at all. It’s time to have each of our voices heard. I’m done allowing others make terrible decisions on my behalf - especially when it comes to wildlife and my hunting opportunities. The beautiful animals that we love, cherish and respect so much belong to US! They are in fact a public resource and as such, should be governed by those that own them. We own them. The public owns them. Our elk and mule deer herds do not and should not ever belong to the wealthy or the government. Please join me in my efforts to be better about making my voice heard. We all need to stand up and make it better. We owe it to the future of hunting. We owe it to the great and majestic animals we pursue. We owe it to our children and to their children. If we don’t, we already know what will happen. They will just keep taking it away from us. One sad and frustrating piece at a time. They = the Wildlife Board (at the moment)
