Michael Heath - Memories of the Lancaster bomber crash in Colchester April 1944. Recorded in 2020

This is a recording of Michael Heath who witnessed the last few moments of a RAF Lancaster bomber before it crashed near the Ipswich Road area in Colchester, North Essex. The location being the periphery of a large American airfield called 'Boxted Airfield, Station 150.' The 626 Squadron Lancaster was based at Wickenby in Lincolnshire and was attacked on its' return leg of a bombing operation to Karlsruhe, Germany. Records of the attack imply this occurred near Diss in Norfolk. Some ten minutes after being shot up by the German Night Fighter the burning aircraft was seen over Colchester and it's believed the crew were trying to land at Boxted. Other witnesses report that the Lancaster was flying at rooftop height with all engines working but 'screaming.' The aircraft was making little headway and circled the area several times before finally crashing at 04.10 hours. The Americans had done all they could to aid the crew by lighting the flare path on the main runway on this foggy Spring morning, 25th April 1944. Michael was 12 years old when this crash happened. In 2020 when he was recorded he was 88 years old.
