Mini Nubians Born on the Family Homestead!

Ever since we brought our first Nubian goat, Belle, home we have fallen in love with these large, standard-sized goats. That's not to say we don't still love our little Nigerian Dwarf goats, but the big goats have a lot going for them. What is even better, yet, is that we can cross a standard doe to a dwarf buck and get what is known as a "mini" goat. More on that in a second. On our small family homestead we raise goats and chickens, and a beef steer at certain times of the year. We want to use our land to provide as much food as we can for our family. We really enjoy dairy goats. They are a lot of work but there are so many things you can do with goat milk. When we first decided to get dairy goats we went after the Nigerian Dwarf variety. Nigerian Dwarfs are very friendly and have a high-butterfat content in their milk; the downside is that as a smaller breed they just don't produce a lot of milk. After a couple of years Megan decided that she wanted to give Nubians a try. I think it was the ears that won her over. After Belle's first kidding on the farm last year we fell in love and the wheels started turning. You can cross a standard-size doe to a dwarf buck and get what's known as a "mini" goat. Mini goats can be the best of both worlds: a high-production animal in a smaller package. The first generation of this cross is known as an "F1" variety, and as you continue to breed the genes become for and more stable until you get to a point where you have a "pure" mini animal. We have high hopes for these goat kids and we're looking forward to future possibilities. A whole new world has opened up for us on our farm. We hope you'll come along on this adventure with us.
