Oldies But Goldies - The Hollyridge Strings (Stereo Tape Album)

In 1966, The Hollyridge Strings recorded two albums: The New Beatles Songbook with Stu Phillips as arranger/conductor and Oldies But Goldies with another talented arranger/composer, Perry Botkin Jr. (1933-2021). Mr. Botkin is probably best known for composing the Oscar-nominated song, “Bless the Beasts and the Children” performed by The Carpenters as well as "Nadia's Theme" which was the theme song for the long-running soap opera, "The Young and the Restless." However, he had a lengthy career prior to that, producing albums for Bobby Darin, The Cascades (“Rhythm of the Rain”), Harry Nilsson and a Zebra Radio personal favorite, “No Matter What Shape (Your Stomach’s In”) by the T-Bones among many other groups and artists. Although he mostly hewed to the sound and style of The Hollyridge Strings as laid down by Mr. Phillips, Mr. Botkin did make one slight change; instead of three French horns, he swapped one horn for a trombone. This would be a natural move on Mr. Botkin’s part since he played the instrument. Plus his use of trombone extended the octave range of the brass section, providing a nice texture to the orchestra's overall sound. The album was recorded at Capitol Records famous Hollywood and Vine studios. Joe Polito was the recording engineer. The audio source used for this video is a Capitol Records reel-to-reel tape so you will hear no surface noise. Also, the pre-recorded tape reflects a little more accurately the EQ of the master recording when compared to the LP. The music on this album sounds just as fresh and exciting today as it did over five decades ago. (Note: one song was deleted due to copyright restrictions). The music is being made available strictly for cultural and artistic purposes.
