Difference Between Private, Unlisted, Public, and Scheduled YouTube Video Visibility Settings

Learn the difference between Private, Unlisted, Public, and Scheduled YouTube visibilty settings. You've uploaded your video to YouTube. You're now ready to publish it. Under Visibility you're given 4 options. They're Private, Unlisted and Public. There's also the Scheduled option. What are the differences between them? A private video will not be displayed on your channel when it is published. A private video is meant for the eyes of certain people only. An example of a private video is a family video you want only your family members to see. When you set your video to private, you're given the option to share your video privately. When you select this option, you'll be prompted to enter the email addresses of those you want to share the video with. You'll also be given the option notify these persons via email. The persons receiving the email notification will click on the link and view the video. If you don't chose the share privately option, only you can view the video. You can only share the private video through email. You can't share the link to the private video through any other means. If you do,the person who receives the link gets the following message. Private videos will not show up on YouTube or in the search engine results. Your channel subscribers will not be notified when you upload a private video. Those with permission to view the private video, can't comment on it. The person receiving the email to view the private video can't forward it to others to watch it. Only the owner of the private video can decide who is allowed to watch it. You can set the visibility of your video to private after publishing it as public. Your subscribers will not be notified when you change your video visibility from public to private. An unlisted video is very much like a private video. However, there are differences. An unlisted video will not show on your channel or listed on YouTube. It will also not be shown on search engine results. The owner can share the unlisted video link with anyone. No email invitation is required. The person receiving the unlisted video link can share it with others, too. No Google account is needed to watch the video. The permission of the owner is not needed to share the link. An unlisted video can be included in a playlist though. The unlisted video in the playlist appear in the search results. A viewer can also comment on an unlisted video. Channel subscribers will not be notified when an unlisted video is published. The video owner can later change an unlisted video to private after publishing it. Those with the link will not be able to view it any longer. A public video is the most common option under video visibility. All the restrictions of a private or unlisted video are lifted. Videos are fully visible to the world and can be shared by anyone and commented on. A public video can be switched to private or unlisted by the owner at any time. What about the option to schedule the video? Use the schedule option if you don't want to immediately publish your video after uploading it. Set the date and time you want the video to be published. You want to publish it at a later date and time. Maybe you'll not be available at the date or time. The schedule option is useful if you'll be away at the specified date and time. Also, you can publish the video in the early hours of the morning when you'll be asleep. Until the set date and time comes, the video will be private on YouTube. You can always reschedule the video later if you change your mind. With the schedule option, you can select the Set as Premiere option. This will allow you and your viewers to watch the video together. You can then engage in a live chat with your viewers and answer comments. The schedule option will not work if you have a Community Guidelines strike before the date is due. If the strike is lifted, you'll have to reschedule the video. You now know the difference between a private, unlisted, public and scheduled video. Go ahead and choose the best visibility setting for your video.
