Freddie Krivine Reunion - 2023

Last week, we held an incredibly emotional reunion for the children from Fureidis and Jisr az Zarka who joined my father's first coexistence program more than 20 years ago. It had been more than a decade since the group had last seen each other, but they all came together on our courts in Beit Hanania, with some admitting to not having picked up a racket in all those years. It took a bit of persuasion, but soon everyone was on court playing doubles, and it was as though they were teenagers again - the techniques learned had not been lost, and they all fought for every point. The reunion took a fun turn when much loved tennis trainer, Danny Meder, showed up as a surprise visitor. He had been their inspired team coach and mentor, from the first day he met them, when they were nervous eight year olds, completely new to tennis, until they reached eighteen and finished high school. At last week's dinner they all spoke of the stash of medals and cups that many still had on display in their homes. The meeting was full of love and enthusiasm, as everyone shared beautiful memories of their days together. Danny had everyone laughing as he reminded them of the cheeky mischief they used to get up to and how he had to deal with it. As the evening progressed, each person shared where they were today in their personal and professional lives. There were such varied professions, several doctors, a carpenter, the co-owner one of the region's best known fish shops, a hair dresser, mothers, fathers, and even a holistic care practitioner. I am proud to add that the FKI Head Coach Muhameed Rashwan was also a member of that very first group. Everyone agreed that the program was more than just a sport; it had a hand in shaping their successful futures. They reflected on its life changing impact. Dr Munir Amash, originally from Jisr a Zarqa, now a doctor in the Afula hospital said he wouldn't be where he is today if Freddie had not chosen him to be part of the first-ever program. It was heartwarming to witness their sports achievements and see that they had all gone on to lead successful and bright futures. This reunion reminded us that sports can work wonders and has the power to transform lives. In 2000 Freddie started with 15 children, today we have over 150!
