POSTCARDS OF WINDSOR ESSEX AND ONTARIO ST. THOMAS ELEVATED PARK by WINDSOR AERIAL DRONE PHOTOGRAPHY

POSTCARDS OF WINDSOR ESSEX AND ONTARIO. Today we are featuring a very unique park, unlike anything else in Canada. It is called the St. Thomas Elevated Park. It is Canada's first and only elevated park, located on the top of a former railway bridge. The Canada Southern Railway Kettle Creek Bridge was completed in February of 1872. The single track bridge was made of framed timber and was 92 feet high and 1365 feet long. In 1883, the timber trestle was replaced with a double tracked metal structure.  On April 25th, 1929 work began to replace the bridge with a project cost of $689,000.00 The steel for the new bridge was fabricated by the Canadian Bridge Company in Windsor Ontario. St. Thomas was known as the Railway City and as early as 1914, St. Thomas had 8 different railway companies operating there with over 100 trains a day passing through the city. With the abundance of trains, St. Thomas became a popular stop for the circus as the trains provided them with an efficient mode of transportation. _______________________________________________________ The darker side of the train boom in St. Thomas: Sadly, with the onset of trains, a famous elephant named "Jumbo" died in St. Thomas 139 years ago today when it was struck by a locomotive.  As part of the Barnum and Bailey Circus, the elephant was struck as it was being loaded into a boxcar when an unscheduled freight train came down the tracks and collided with the elephant. Jumbo was a 12' tall, 7 ton elephant. He was sold to the circus in New York at the age of 21 in 1882.  Jumbo was hyped as the biggest elephant in the world by P.T. Barnum. Over Jumbo's lifetime, it was estimated that more than 20 million people had came to see him. One hundred years after Jumbo's death, the City of St. Thomas dedicated a sculpture as a memorial honouring this magnificent and the world's most famous elephant. Two years after the accident, on July 15th, 1887, two trains collided in St. Thomas which caused a massive explosion where 14 people were killed and 68 were injured. By the 1950's and 1960's, the decline of railways along with other economic factors crippled the railway business for St. Thomas. In it's heyday, this railway bridge carried as many as 50 trains daily. Close to 10 decades after the bridge was first built, it had been transformed into a beautiful outdoor space complete with flower gardens, art displays and more. The park is a unique green space, which also happens to be wheelchair accessible. it is open from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m, seven days a week.
