Ontologies: An Overlooked Route to Simplicity Ontologists often get feedback from peers outside the ontology community that the models created are too complex. There is some validity in that criticism. Ontology construction is complex enough what with the restrictions, and inference instead of constraints, and the puzzling side effects of open world reasoning. And many ontologies are numerically complex, that is there are many, often non-intuitive concepts to be mastered to become competent with the artifacts. But it is possible to use the power and complexity of the semantic ecosystem to build artifacts that are simple, without losing fidelity. These simpler artifacts are far easier to leverage. This talk will introduce the core of the approach that leads to elegant ontologies. From there we will cover two use cases that each highlight a different aspect of the simplicity premium. The Morgan Stanley story tells how simplicity aided in what we now call “zero copy integration.” The Schneider-Electric story covers how a 100:1 reduction in complexity led to an even bigger reduction is configuration rule writing, and then two more unanticipated bonuses, integrating an acquired company and complying with a complex standard. Finally, we will speculate on what an approach like this might look like at the FDA (very speculative, just meant to be a thought experiment).
