Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in short (COPD) is a long-term lung condition that makes it difficult to breathe. It is actually an umbrella term used for two conditions occurring together; chronic bronchitis and Emphysema. Let's look at these two conditions separately now. Chronic bronchitis Chronic bronchitis is the inflammation of bronchial tubes. As a result, thick mucus builds up in the lining of the tube, making it difficult to get air into and out of the lungs. In addition to this, chronic bronchitis damages the cilia of lining cells. Cilia are small, hair-like structures on the inside of the bronchial tubes that are responsible for moving mucus out of the airways. But the irritation from chronic bronchitis damages them. Hence the damaged cilia are unable to clear the mucus. Emphysema Emphysema is caused by the damaging of the tiny air sacs called (alveoli) in the lungs. The alveoli are elastic in nature and help us to inhale and exhale air properly. But in emphysema the elastic muscle of alveoli get damaged which make it hard for alveoli to get us a full breath. Causes of COPD? Most people with COPD are at least 40 years old and have at least some history of smoking. Smoking tobacco causes up to 90% of COPD cases. Other causes include: • Secondhand smoke. • Air pollution. • And Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, which is a rare genetic disorder. Alpha-1-antitrypsin is a protein that protects your alveoli. So its deficiency can also lead to COPD even if you are not a smoker. Sign and Symptoms of COPD At first, you might not have any symptoms. But as the disease gets worse, you might notice these common signs of COPD: • Cough with mucus that persists for long periods of time. • Difficulty taking a deep breath. • Shortness of breath with mild exercise and regular daily activities. Diagnosis For the diagnosis of COPD chest X-ray or CT scan is done along with spirometry. During the spirometry, you’ll take a deep breath and then blow into a tube connected to the spirometer. This test measures how much and how easily you can breathe air in and out of your lungs. Treatments of COPD? There’s no cure of COPD, so the goal of treatment is to ease your symptoms and slow the disease. One of the best things you can do to stop your COPD from getting worse is to stop smoking.
