My originals EP "The Lockdown Sessions", available to listen and buy on Bandcamp: https://jarrodgrgic.bandcamp.com/albu... ----- Hey everyone, here's a cover of Mac DeMarco's track "Chamber of Reflection". This was the first track I started recording last year, and when I started researching the song and how best to recreate the sounds from the original recording, I found that Mac used a Roland Juno-60 for the lead sound (and I was able to use a Roland Juno-Stage to get a similar sound), but also crucially he used a Yamaha DX7 for the organ. I tried using Dexed as a free equivalent of the DX7/FM synthesis engine, but it didn't quite have the depth of sound of the original recording (even with a similar thick chorus sound applied). I managed to find an original Yamaha DX7 for a decent price that needed a fair bit of work as it had a dead battery/no presets and distorted sound/extremely low output (though it was sold as fully working, and it even seemed to fully work when I tested it before purchasing it), and after a few months of troubleshooting and replacing some components I managed to get it pretty much fully working. It does sounds noticeably grittier than the Dexed plugin because of the lower bit depth of the internals (it might actually be noisier than if it was fully refurbished properly), but that added grittiness actually added some of that depth that I was missing with the plugin. Safe to say I'll definitely be using this keyboard a lot in the future -- there are also quite a few other songs I recorded this year that also use sounds from the DX7. While there isn't a solo or lead break of any kind in the original Mac DeMarco track other than the main melody, I decided to add a guitar solo, and as a result of knowing that Jeff Beck had passed away in January of last year, the solo that I recorded was heavily inspired by Jeff's playing style. ----- Programs used: DAW: Logic Pro 10.6.3 DAW (Drums): Pro Tools HD 10 Video Editing: Vegas Pro 18 Instruments: - Acoustic Guitar: Maton EM225C - Electric Guitar: Homemade JBG-6 w/ EMG 89/SA/SA - Bass Guitar: Fender Standard Precision Bass - Drums: Pearl 4-Piece Vision SST Birch - Snare: Mapex Saturn Pro Series 14x5.5" - Hi-Hats: Zildjian "A" New Beat 14" - Crash Cymbal 1: Zildjian "A" Medium Thin 18" - Crash Cymbal 2: Zildjian "A" Sweet Ride 21" - Ride Cymbal: Sabian "AA" Medium 20" - Organ, string synth: Yamaha DX7 - Lead synth, pad synth: Roland JUNO-STAGE Gear: - Guitar Amp: Vox AC30 - Guitar Overdrive: Boss BD-2W Blues Driver - Bass Compressor: Seymour Duncan Studio Bass Compressor Interface: Roland STUDIO-CAPTURE UA1610 Interface (Drums): Digidesign 96 I/O Microphones: - AKG C414 (x2) (Acoustic guitar, electric guitar, tambourine, toms) - AKG D112 (Kick) - Neumann KM184 (x3) (Drum overheads and snare) - Neumann U87 (x2) (Drum room) - Sennheiser MD421 (Vocals) Camera: Panasonic G95 - Main Lens: Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 17mm f/1.8 - Zoom Lens: Panasonic Lumix G 12-60mm f/3.5-5.6 ---- Guitar Tunings and Gauges: Maton EM225C: - E Standard: E-A-D-G-B-E - Elixir Nanoweb Phosphor Bronze Custom Light (11-52) Homemade JBG-6 - E Standard: E-A-D-G-B-E - Ernie Ball Hybrid Slinky (9-46) Fender Standard Precision Bass - E Standard: E-A-D-G - Unknown flatwounds Twitter:   / imafuturegh   Facebook:   / imafutureguitarhero
