The history of First KENYAN Railways built by INDIANS🇰🇪🇮🇳

Hi Everyone, I wanted to film inside the Kenyan Railway Museum and talk about the history of Kenyan Railway where Indian laborers, engineers played a pivotal role in building the railway, but I was not allowed to take videos which was quite disappointing. So I’m writing it here; In 1885, the British was set to open up the interior of East Africa by connecting the Indian Ocean to Uganda using the railway. In 1887, the British government formalized its control over Mombasa and surrounding coastal areas through treaties and agreements with local rulers. This paved way for the construction of Mombasa- Nairobi Railway, a monumental project aimed at linking the Indian Ocean port of Mombasa with the interior of Kenya. The construction of railway posed numerous challenges such as disease outbreaks, shortage of labor and attacks from local tribes resisting British colonialization. The railway line was nicknamed as 'Lunatic Line' due to skepticism with which many viewed the ambitious endeavor. Despite the numerous difficulties and setbacks, the Mombasa-Nairobi Railway was eventually completed in 1901, marking a significant milestone in colonial history. Drawn by the promise of employment opportunity, thousands of Indian labourers, craftsmen and engineers ventured across the Indian Ocean to participate in the construction of Railways. This line was laid by Indians in Kenya at the behest of British, who desperately wanted to keep the advance of imperial German in Africa in check. The railway, which reached Kisumu (then known as Port Florence) in 1902, marked the beginning of Kenya's relationship with India, with most of the workmen who did the real construction being Indians.
