Castle Hill & The Jubilee Tower, Huddersfield.

This ancient site has been a settlement for at least FOUR THOUSAND years, with evidence found of the Mesolithic, Neolithic and Bronze Ages. It has been a village, a fortress and a place of political & religious activism, a place for fist fighting, cock fighting and dog fighting, (and in modern times it was host to other “Dog” related activities), ahem. Castle Hill has been a bustling location throughout its history, and a Tavern/Inn/Pub was built there in around 1810, serving all who visited. The pub was lost after a legal row between the council and a developer, meaning more of our heritage was lost. The Victoria/Jubilee Tower was built to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria’s reign, and was declared open on 24 June 1899. The monument had “mountain status” for many years as it was over 1000ft above sea level, but it was slightly lowered at the very top and immediately lost that credential. #huddersfield #odersfelt #castlehill #almondbury
