Firstly, the patient has to achieve stabilization of Androgenetic Alopecia (AGA) via medical treatment. Depending on the Donor vs Recipient Area ratio, and patient age and the patients’ goals and objectives, we find an optimal balance by combining harvesting techniques to protect the donor area, but to still reach the required follicle unit number for the envisioned result. At the core of modern hair restoration surgery is the art and science of combining harvesting techniques via FUT Strip and standard FUE technique from the Safe Donor Area along with FUE harvesting from the Beard Area below the Jaw Line, especially when large follicle unit numbers are required. This is done when the patient has achieved stabilization of AGA. The finishing effects are achieved via artistic application of SMP (scalp micro pigmentation), which is usually done at 6 to 12 months post-op. The Beard Area below the Jaw Line is my Buffer zone, where I know I will be getting the additional grafts to get over the line and achieve the final number required. Beard follicles are excellent to use as “spacers”. They add volume to the total hair mass because of their strong calibre and this frees up the regular SDA follicle units to be used strategically in the frontal areas and the hairline, creating a natural appearance. The Beard Area below the Jaw Line heals incredibly well due to excellent blood supply. The cornerstone of modern hair restoration is firstly to achieve stabilization of Androgenetic Alopecia with medical treatment. This provides a solid foundation from which to plan a hair transplant procedure that will achieve an optimal result and stand the test of time. In all cases, including this one, the patient underwent a pre-operative consultation at HSW Clinic before committing to the procedure. The transplant was done in areas of hair loss in the hairline, frontal zone, mid-scalp and crown area. Given the large number of grafts, it was essential to plan precisely where each graft would be placed to maximize density and natural results. It was also essential to evaluate the donor area at the back of the scalp and the beard area below the jaw line, ensuring there were enough healthy hair follicles for extraction. The Day of Surgery at HSW Clinic: Given the large scale of the transplant (6280 follicle units), the time allocated for the procedure was two full days as well as doing the design, planning and incisions the evening prior to Day One.
