Easy crafts to do with kids

Looking for easy crafts to do with kids this summer? As part of our school's out survival guide, we've made a video with two easy craft projects to do with your children (or let them get on with whilst you put your feet up). HOW TO MAKE AN INSECT MOBILE Time to make: Two hours You will need: Cardboard tubes (loo roll would be good) Ready craft mix paints Coloured card, with at least one sheet of red Pom poms Pipe cleaners Googly eyes Black tape An embroidery hoop Embroidery thread Black pen Glue To make: 1) Begin by painting cardboard tubes. Cut them so they're three different sizes, making sure that one of the smaller ones is yellow/orange in order to be a bee. When they're dry, stick googly eyes on them all and draw on smiles. 2) Take a piece of card. Fold it in half, cut out the outline of a capital B with the long straight line against the fold, and open it up. Squirt dollops of paint onto one side of the wings. Fold it back together and squash it around to create a symmetrical pattern. Let it dry 3) Make two holes near the top of the largest tube and insert pipe cleaners with the ends curled in order to make antenna. 4) Take the yellow painted tube and add strips of black tape round the middle. Make wings and glue them onto the back. Repeat these steps, without the stripes, to the finale tube. 5) To make the ladybird, cut two circles from red card. Draw or paint on a black head and spots and draw a black line down the middle when dry. Add googly eyes then glue the two ladybirds back to back with a long piece of embroidery thread in the middle for hanging. 6) o make a card flower, cut out two flower shapes from different coloured card. Glue together at an angle and glue a pompom in the middle 7) To hang the mobile, pierce a hole in the top of each animal and flower. For the tube animals, you need a hole at the top on both the front and back for it to hang even. Feed embroidery thread through each hole with a needle and tie onto the embroidery hoop, arranging each creature at different heights. TO MAKE AN ICE-LOLLY TOTE BAG: You will need: Self-adhesive foam Tracing paper and pencil Thick cardboard Cotton tote bag Scissors Fabric paint in four different colours To make: 1) Draw a lolly shape on foam - don't forget the stick! Cut the shapes out and cut the lolly three times widthways so that it's in three sections 2) Write FAB backwards into the foam stick, really digging in so that it leaves an indentation 3) Draw sprinkles onto the top section of the lolly, digging in so it leaves an indentation 4) Stick the foam shapes onto cardboard backing sheets only slightly larger than the foam shape itself. Arrange them on the tote bag so you can ensure you have enough space 5) Apply a thin layer of fabric paint to each foam layer in turn. Turn it over, press firmly, then carefully peel it off.
