Feel very privileged to have flown in this chipmunk. One of three original Canadian Chipmunks procured by the RAF in 1947 to evaluate for use as their basic trainer. This is believed to be the oldest surviving Chipmunk that is still airworthy. Some very famous test pilots of the 1950’s have flown this aircraft (For example, John Derry, the de Havilland test pilot who invented the Derry Turn and who was the first UK pilot to break the sound barrier, “Mutt” Summers (the first pilot to fly the Spitfire prototype), John “Cats Eyes” Cunningham (the high scoring night fighter ace and Comet jet test pilot) and deHavilland Company test pilots, Pat Fillingham and Jeffery Pike) This Chipmunk has been under the care of Dave Gillespie and has resided in Canada under this registration (its original registration). She is now lovingly and proudly cared for by her new guardians Ken (P1 in the video) and Jean at Durham Tees Valley Airport. This Chipmunk won the Kings Cup Air Race on 21-Jun-53. see: http://www.royalaeroclubrrra.co.uk/ki... The race was won by Pat Fillingham and his wife, Sonia. Sonia Fillingham was reunited with KDN last year at the Old Warden 70th Chipmunk Anniversary. see https://vimeo.com/168795000 (1m10s in)
