In The 1975’s ‘Sincerity Is Scary’ video, Matty Healy leaves his apartment and immediately daps up a dog-walking, blue-haired neighbor in an orange jumpsuit. Rome Gomez, aka No Rome, is the guy with the leash, and the moment serves as a solid metaphor for the creative relationship that he shares with his famous pal. At this point, Rome’s career is nicely intertwined with that of the Brit rocker. After all, it was Healy who flew the Manilla native, music-school dropout and blossoming indie pop hero to London to clock a little career ascendance. After impressive vids for “Seventeen” and “Saint Laurent,” he formally united with the ‘75 on last year’s “Narcissist.” It says a lot about No Rome’s potential that we chose him for Artists to Watch 2020, because this past year was already quite fruitful for the buttery-voiced fashionista with the R&B tones. He spanned the globe on tour with Team Healy, including a homecoming gig in the Philippines, and still found time to hit our DSCVR studios for a romp through “Pink” and “Cashmoney.” According to a recent Beats1 interview, Rome also worked with the frontman and drummer George Daniel on the forthcoming ‘75 record. At the end of November, Rome heads out on a 20-show UK run with fellow Dirty Hit roster-mates Beabadoobee and Oscar Lang. Yes, his name is getting out there. Somehow, in between the flurry of activity, we were able to get him back in the DSCVR studio, where he debuted two irresistible newbies: “Talk Nice” and “Trust 3000.” Get to know this indie darling before everyone else does.
