Swan River FLATHEAD SESSION - Family Fishing with my son! - Perth Metro Flats fishing.

J FEELS FLAT – With a scorching Saturday forecast, J asked me if we could head down and do some flathead fishing to beat the heat. My answer – of course! Any excuse for a flatty bash! With the sun blazing down on us, we set out to find a flat we hadn’t been to before. We wasted no time. Our plan – divide and conquer with two rods – one with the new Vexed Buckabou Jig – a new take on an old method, and the other with the ever-popular ZMan Slim Swimz and Streakz. The plastics were on the board first, with a 36cm lizard slamming the Streakz with gusto. I gave the rod away and J reeled it in, and I spent some time teaching him how to properly hold the venomous fish without getting spiked (key note: gloves help!). J, as is his habit, wished to release it, and I complied. Soon after, we battled rocks, weed and wake from nearby boats. In the midst of dodging ferry-created waves, the Buckabou Jig came through with a 42cm slab of a flathead. This one went back too, and we fished on, barely noticing the heat in the cooling waters of the Swan River. Then, it happened. Something slammed J’s rod HARD. The little man showed immense skill (and excitement) to wear down and reel in his very first solo flathead. This one was bang on 40cm. J then surprised me by asking if we could keep it – apparently mum had sent him out with instructions for a feed! All in all, a fantastic session on the Swan River flats. The soft plastics did the damage, as did the Vexed Buckabou Jig (side note: Thanks to Danga from ‪@DangasTackleTips‬ for pointing me toward this jig. Check out his channel – the man is a flathead machine). Can definitely recommend it as a blowfish-free alternative! What a session! Check it out!
