The afternoon took on a slightly more somber note as we arrived at our next location, the scrapyard at Cresson Steel. Our reason for visiting was clear as we pulled into the lot - parked before us in the weeds was a lonely string of ex-Southern and N&W SD40s (and an ex-PC SD38), basking in the sun while awaiting the same fate as their partially-dismantled sister unit which sat a short distance away next to the instrument of her destruction. Once-proud Thoroughbreds waiting in line at the glue factory, as it were. In contrast to the sad scene in Cresson, down in Altoona the Juniata shops were as busy as ever cranking out rebuilds and performing repairs. Pulling up to the backlot fence, our good luck and timing finally ran out - an SW1500 was spinning on the turntable with the carcass of a blue ex-Conrail SD50 as we got out of the car, but before I could set up the camera the table stopped and the switcher pushed its charge away from view. The panorama of locomotives in various states of repair or rebuild (or in the case of battery-powered oddball 999, disuse) was plenty fascinating in any case. It was at Juniata that I finally bid farewell and Godspeed to OhioRails and his traveling sidekick, before they left to check out more of the shops and then return home. As for myself? Well, it wasn't my time to go yet... #train #trainspotting #railfanning #railroad #pennsylvania #travel
