After the conclusion of the prequel trilogy back in 2005, Disney brought Star Wars back to the big screen in 2015 with Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The film introduced a handful of new characters for audiences to root for including Boyega's Finn, Isaac's Poe Dameron, and Daisy Ridley's Rey. The sequel trilogy would ultimately conclude in 2019 with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, which divided both audiences and critics. Although the conclusion to the character arcs of Rey, Finn, and Poe proved divisive, Finn and Poe, in particular, became the subject of fan "shipping". The characters never explicitly had any romantic encounters or expressed romantic feelings for each other, but many fans were nonetheless drawn to the bond between them that was immediately present in The Force Awakens.
