Let's watch how women are empowering themselves and driving the development of rural India through Panchayati Raj! The 73rd Amendment to the Indian Constitution granted constitutional rights to the Panchayati Raj system, which strengthened the concept of grassroots democracy. Article 243D ensures at least 1/3 reservation for women in Panchayati Raj institution elections. However, through the efforts of the Ministry of Panchayati Raj, 21 states and 2 Union Territories have provided 50% reservation, empowering half the population to claim their rightful place in local governance. With over 2.5 lakh Gram Panchayats in the country, there are more than 31 lakh elected Panchayat representatives, of which 46% are women. In the last decade, elected women representatives have empowered themselves through training and capacity building provided by the Ministry and state government, understanding their roles and responsibilities in the Panchayats. Women Sarpanches are now playing the role of change-makers in their villages. The journey to winning the Panchayat elections and reaching the position of Sarpanch or Pradhan has not been easy for these women. Thanks to their transformative changes, women Sarpanches have showcased their achievements on platforms ranging from the UNFPA Summit in New York to the South Asia Summit in Colombo, Sri Lanka. India is now emerging as a model for women's empowerment.
