L’abbesse Irmine de Trèves aurait fait construire au VIIe siècle à ce même emplacement un monastère pour moines ambulants, qu’elle légua au moine Willibrord en 698. L’ensemble comprenait plusieurs sanctuaires, dont l'un dédié aux apôtres saints Pierre et Paul. L’église actuelle a été bâtie vers l’an mille comme basilique romane à trois nefs, deux tours et une abside semi-circulaire. Elle a été transformée aux XVe et XVIIIe siècles. Il s’agit de la première église paroissiale d’Echternach Abbess Irmine of Trier is said to have had a monastery for traveling monks built in the 7th century on this same site, which she bequeathed to the monk Willibrord in 698. The complex included several sanctuaries, including one dedicated to the holy apostles Peter and Paul . The current church was built around the year 1000 as a Romanesque basilica with three naves, two towers and a semi-circular apse. It was transformed in the 15th and 18th centuries. This is the first parish church of Echternach.
