Reweirding: Wanderers: A History of Women Walking

To find out more about Conway Hall: http://www.conwayhall.org.uk/join #Wanderers traces footsteps of ten women writers, and the importance of walking in their work. From 18th century parson’s daughter Elizabeth Carter – who desired nothing more than to be taken for a vagabond in the wilds of southern England – to modern walker-writers such as Nan Shepherd and Cheryl Strayed, walking was integral. Whether it was rambling for miles across the Highlands, like Sarah Stoddart Hazlitt, or pacing novels into being, as Virginia Woolf did around Bloomsbury, these were women who walked. In this #online #talk, academic and author Kerri Andrews explores the lives of ten women over the past three hundred years who found walking essential to their sense of themselves, as people and as writers. — Conway Hall hosts a wide variety of talks, concerts, exhibitions, courses, performances, community and social events. It is also renowned as a hub for free speech and independent thought, hosting suffragettes, political radicals, scientists, philosophers, artists, performers; campaign, charities and other non- profit organisations.
