In his Onomasticon, Julius Pollux (2nd Century AD) tells us the origin of Tyrian Purple, a dye most famously known as being used by the Phoenicians. In his account, he tells us that the Tyrians say that Hercules and his dog were the first to discover the murex mollusc. The dog, spotting the creature, ceased it between its teeth, its lips becoming dyed in the process. The Tyrian nymph Turos, who was a follower and lover of Hercules says she will not welcome Hercules any more unless he provided for her clothes more beautiful than the dogs lips. The passage then gives us an account of how the Tyrians fish for, and prepare the murex mollusc, in order to extract the dye.
