On the rocky hill of the Acropolis, which dominates the centre of modern Athens, stood the greatest and grandest sanctuary of the ancient city, dedicated primarily to its patron goddess, Athena. The Acropolis of the 5th century BC is the most perfect representation of the power of Athens in its greatest heyday, the 'golden age' of Pericles. The Pnyx The Pnyx (Πνύκα) is the site where the Church of the demos, the assembly of the Athenians, convened in Ancient Athens from the 6th century until the end of the 4th century BC. The location of this archaeological site has been confirmed by a marble inscription of the 5th century BC. The monumental site shows three phases of building development Hill of the Nymphs The Hill of the Nymphs is named after the shrine of the same name, which existed at the top of the hill in the 6th century BC. Today, on top of the hill of the Nymphs is the building of the National Observatory of Athens, a project of Theophilos Hansen, built between 1842-1846 and financed by Georgios Sina. The Hill of the Nymphs is connected to the adjacent hills of Philopappos (Hill of the Muses) and the Pnyx.
