Hawaiian Sovereignty Symposium 3: Clyde Namu‘o

The symposium, "I Ka Pono: The Future of Hawaiian Sovereignty," examines the resurgence of Native Hawaiian nationalism today and offers a variety of perspectives on what the future of Hawaiian sovereignty might best look like. In this segment, Clyde Namu‘o, Executive Director, Native Hawaiian Roll Commission, speaks on "The Case for Federal Recognition." Clyde William Namu‘o is the executive director of the Native Hawaiian Roll Commission. He is also the chief executive officer of the Polynesian Voyaging Society, a Hawai’i nonprofit organization established in 1973 “to perpetuate the art and science of traditional Polynesian voyaging through experiential educational programs that inspire students and their communities to respect and care for themselves, each other, and their natural and cultural environment.” From 2001 to 2011, he served as chief executive officer of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs. Before this, Namu’o was the deputy administrative director of the courts, State of Hawaii. He serves on the boards of several nonprofit organizations, including Family Promise of Hawai‘i and the Kukui Children’s Foundation. The symposium is presented in conjunction with the museum's exhibition, "E Mau Ke Ea: The Sovereign Hawaiian Nation," on view through January, 2017. For more information, see the exhibit web site: http://www.nmai.si.edu/explore/exhibi.... The symposium was webcast and recorded in the Rasmuson Theater of the National Museum of the American Indian on January 30, 2016.
